Curriculum

Common Core

The California State Board of Education adopted the Common Core standards in 2010. Since that time, West Covina has been working to implement them into our classrooms’ curriculum. These core standards establish consistent and clear educational goals for the entire state to help our students be better prepared for college and career.

Our teachers are utilizing Common Core, along with Essential Standards, to teach our students to think critically and master concepts in a building block style. We believe this will enable them to connect learning to real life.

CAASPP

The Smarter Balanced assessments are new computer-based tests that measure student knowledge of California’s English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics standards. These new assessments replace the former paper-based, multiple-choice assessments for students in grades three through eight and grade eleven.

ELPAC

The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is the successor to the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). Beginning in 2017–18, the ELPAC is the required state test for English language proficiency (ELP) that must be given to students whose primary language is a language other than English. The California Department of Education (CDE) expects to be fully transitioned from the CELDT to the ELPAC as the state's assessment of ELP by 2018–19.
